(Metadata) Title: Otranto and surroundings - From the sea to the lakes in the beauty of the hinterland

(Metadata) Descrizione: From the sea to the hinterland, passing by a historic farmhouse and the lake: the cycle route from Otranto up the Valle dell'Idro through a sea of olive trees is very varied. With your back to the bay, it only takes a few metres to leave the urbanised centre and find yourself in the countryside: just take the Idro municipal road, an entirely tarmac road that looks like a natural cycle path, were it not for car traffic (which fortunately prefers other routes). The road, in fact, has a very narrow carriageway and for this reason it is necessary to pay attention to the passage of cars. We cycle through the Valle dell'Idro (km 0.4), named after the watercourse fed by springs on the north side of the valley, the sources of Carlo Magno, which are a little higher up. It's only a stream, but just enough for the valley's vegetable gardens that feed the community of Otranto (here, among other things, they grow water-fed chicory, a local speciality). Water that in the past was even used to build a real small aqueduct to meet the military needs of the port bases (the British built it) and those of the local population. The route climbs, but the difference in height is fairly slight. Gradually the olive trees take over and then give way to small cultivated fields when you get near Casamassella (km 5.8), a small hamlet of Minervino di Lecce, which welcomes you with its singular, peaceful square overlooked by the imposing castle, now an accommodation facility and location for ceremonies. Leaving the town, after about one kilometre, cross Provincial Road 56, after having driven along it for two hundred metres, and you find yourself among the olive trees in the presence of one of the most beautiful monuments of the megalithic civilisation of Salento, the Dolmen Li Scusi (km 9.2), which tells of thousands of years of history and ancestral rites. At the end of the nineteenth century, the "discovery" of this megalithic monument (surveyed in 1867) triggered the search for these original testimonies to past civilisations. There is an abundance of them right here in the Otranto hinterland, to the point that this is considered the largest megalithic garden in Italy. We continue along minor roads until we come to the village of Minervino di Lecce, a small town in the Otranto hinterland, and immediately reach the historic centre (11.1 km), where we are greeted by a lovely rectangular square overlooked by the Chiesa Madre di San Michele Arcangelo, whose façade, however, is oriented in a different direction with its precious Baroque rose window whose carvings recall that of the Basilica di Santa Croce in Lecce. Leave the village by the road for Giuggianello, following it for a few hundred metres after the roundabout, then turn right and take a secondary road bordered by dry stone walls that cuts through the countryside. After turning right, you start pedalling through olive groves that soon turn into monumental olive trees (14.5 km), now struggling with the scourge of Xylella. Another two kilometres and a very short diversions to the right opens the door to one of the most enigmatic magical places in the Salento: the Massi della Vecchia (16.5 km), original rocks of great size and strange shapes that have inspired the most imaginative legends. One such legend has it that this is the kingdom of a witch, the Vecchia, who rewarded those who gave the right answer to her questions with a hen with seven golden chicks, but punished those who made a mistake by turning them into rocks. Thus, within a radius of a few dozen metres, one after the other, we find Lu Lettu te la Vecchia (the bed of the old woman), Lu Furticiddhu te la Vecchia (the flywheel of the old woman's spindle) and the Piede d'Ercole (foot of Hercules), all large calcarenite formations from the Miocene epoch, which rain and wind have bizarrely modelled over time. Turn back for a very short distance and continue cycling through the countryside among the olive trees for about three kilometres until you enter the town and reach the historic centre of Palmariggi (20.3 km). It is the castle, or rather what remains of it, that greets the cyclist in the large square: the mighty tower is just one example of the great manor that the Aragonese built here and which today stands alongside the historic Palazzo Vernazza, today the seat of the small municipality (the community has less than 1,500 inhabitants). Another three kilometres along minor roads open the door to another small town, Bagnolo del Salento (km 24), with its historic centre dominated by Lecce stone. In the large square dominated by the Church of San Giorgio and the imposing Palazzo Papaleo, there is also room for a small fountain of the Apulian Aqueduct, which is a good place to refuel and continue the journey. We leave Bagnolo by taking a rural road that in a couple of kilometres opens the door to Cannole (km 27.1), another small town with 1,700 inhabitants. This is the home of the 'municeddhe', or snails, which are 'cultivated' here and cooked with great gusto. Since 1985, a large popular festival has celebrated the 'escargot del Salento' for four days on the eve of Ferragosto. In the square stands the Granafei Castle with its austere rusticated portal, built by the Orsini del Balzo family in 1413 but extensively remodelled in the 18th century. In the square, right by the fountain that dispenses water from the Pugliese Aqueduct, turn left into Via Madonna, following the tourist signs for Torcito. A few pedalings in the suburbs and we enter Torcito Park, where the road becomes a dirt road again. The central part of Masseria Torcito (km 28.6) is announced by the beginning of a cart road dug into the rock, where the deep furrows that over the centuries have traced the wheels of carts are evident. This was in fact a crucial junction of the Salento routes, with the Via Traiano Calabra leading to Otranto. But human traffic and frequentation here was much more ancient, as evidenced by the oval pits next to the road itself, an unmistakable sign of the presence of a necropolis. The masseria dates back to the 12th century and is a very large complex that includes two chapels, a crypt, an underground oil mill, a dovecote tower, traces of Basilian settlements, neviere (granaries) and granaries. Renovated in 2002 by the Province of Lecce to make it a tourist attraction, the place has had to come to terms with the foolishness of those who see these places as no man's land rather than as a precious common good. It is hard to pedal over live rock and deep ruts to get past the perimeter on which the farmhouse stands. Immediately after, you enter the large pine forest of the estate and cross it to come out on the Martano-Otranto provincial road, which you must cross with great care. We continue for a couple of kilometres on a small tarmac road cutting through the countryside among young olive trees and tidy fields, until, surprisingly, in the open countryside we come to the Church of Santa Marina di Stigliano (km 32.2), dedicated to the cult of the saint who, because of her beauty, is considered the protector of "beautiful complexion" (jaundice sufferers turn to her). And it is of course a Byzantine Saint Marina that stands out in the niche of the high altar. But if the church is striking for its isolation, you only have to look to the left to see the remains of the old farmhouse, practically encompassed in the wild vegetation: here was a village that was abandoned, perhaps because it was devastated by pirates from the sea. And among the ruins there is also a crypt, difficult to identify. Leaving the suggestions of history behind, we continue behind the church, entering a beautiful and extensive pine forest, along a dirt road that crosses the whole of the church and continues for more than two kilometres, until we return to an asphalt road. Another two kilometres and you come out on Provincial Road 342, which you follow for almost two kilometres. It is time to turn left, following the tourist arrow indicating "lago" (lake), along a small road that soon becomes a dirt track. The lake on the sign is one of the two Alimini lakes, always referred to in the plural because they are so close and linked by a canal, "Lu Strittu". The first, Alimini Grande, is almost two and a half kilometres long, while the second, Alimini Piccolo or Fontanelle, is a little less extensive. Both are generated by the old marshes, but while Alimini Grande has brackish water closer to that of the sea, with which it communicates, in the Fontanelle lake freshwater springs prevail. Pedal through the pine forest that forms a green frame for the lakes until you come to a panoramic point (km 40.4) where a simple bench on the lake shore adds a touch of romance to the natural setting. Turn back and ride along the beautiful pine forest that provides a green frame for the two lakes, pedalling just a few metres from the placid body of water until you return to an asphalt road. At this point the direction is towards the sea: take the coastal road and after a kilometre and a half the pine forest opens up and, just at the level of the canal connecting Alimini Grande to the sea, you will find Alimini beach (km 44.8). Here there is an opportunity for a healthy swim, in an area where the pine forest faces directly onto the sand, which forms imposing dunes. To get back on track, turn back onto the coast road and then right to take a network of minor roads which, crossing the same coast road again, leads to Otranto in just over seven kilometres of tarmac road. At the first roundabout, turn left to look out over the bay of Otranto: at the foot of the Cappella della Madonna dell'Altomare (km 53.6), the charm of the old village perched around the cathedral and castle can be seen from afar. A very short hairpin bend takes you down to sea level and along the entire seafront, turning left to return to the starting point and find yourself in the presence of Porta Alfonsina (54.4 km). If you still want to go on, here is the old town of Otranto, which with its Cathedral (just a few hundred metres further on) recounts the epic story of the 800 martyrs.

(Metadata) Title: From Otranto to Maglie amidst menhirs, Greek-Byzantine atmospheres and views of Italy's most easterly coastline

(Metadata) Descrizione: The route begins from the Idro municipal road, adjacent to the large car park at the entrance to the historic town and which runs up the valley of the same name. A short, slightly uphill stretch allows us to turn right onto the 'Papi' road and thus enter the roundabout leading to the provincial road for Giurdignano. After a few hundred metres we continue to the right on a low-traffic road which is also the starting point for the so-called "Maglie - Otranto slow fruition route" created when the SS16 was widened. The red colour of the asphalt and the presence of rest areas make pedalling or walking very pleasant and peaceful. The impression is that of being on a cycle path, even if there are no restrictions on car access (which, however, are very rare and limited to landowners). After travelling almost 3 km from the starting point in Otranto, we leave behind the sight of the imposing four-lane road on which cars parade at high speed and finally enter the peaceful Salento countryside. Here it is the colour of the red earth and the harmony of the dry stone walls that accompany us, even if you can't help but feel a sense of loss and almost bewilderment for what until a few years ago was a lush green-silver vegetation of olive trees of the most diverse shapes and imposing sizes. The scourge of Xylella (a bacterium that has struck Salento and causes the trees to dry out rapidly) has profoundly changed the landscape, which is now trying to regenerate itself through new replanting. And indeed the countryside is alive and well despite everything. At the junction with the provincial road, you can choose whether to continue straight ahead along the cycle path or to bypass the SS16 immediately following the track, thus following the cycle path on the north side that leads to Palmariggi (10 km). A brief stop in the central square, in view of the two circular towers that once formed the larger Aragonese Castle and the Church of the Madonna della Palma, then continue along Via Risorgimento and Via Antico Cammino to reach the Sanctuary of Montevergine, built in 1707 over a rock church that still houses a precious Byzantine icon. A pilgrimage destination, the hillock that houses the Sanctuary is a large pine forest with picnic areas, useful in the summer months to regenerate a bit, especially if you are travelling with children, and from which you could take the path that leads further north to Masseria Torcito, but off our itinerary. The pleasant road from Masseria Gianicola leads to Bagnolo del Salento (15 km). In the large central square, where the Church of San Giorgio and the imposing Palazzo Papaleo stand out, there is a small fountain belonging to the Apulian Aqueduct, which is a good place to fill up with water and continue the journey. Along Via Materdomini, at the cemetery, the 4-metre-high menhir Croce di Bagnolo marks the crossroads, allowing us to continue to the right and avoid the provincial road, enjoying the peacefulness of the Salento landscape. The menhirs, scattered throughout the Salento region but especially in this area, date back to the early Middle Ages and were used as sacred sites by the rural population. Just under 1 km away, turn left towards Cursi (km 19), the capital of Lecce stone, due to the large number of quarries from which the raw material is extracted that makes the façades of Salento's palaces and churches shine, and whose malleability has made Lecce Baroque famous. The eco-museum in Piazza Pio XII, inside the Frantoio Ipogeo di Palazzo De Donno, often hosts art installations, cultural events and exhibitions related to local stone and the stones of Puglia, as well as being a tourist infopoint. Just outside Cursi, a small diversions allows you to explore the small hamlet of Morigino with its 16th-century church of San Giovanni Battista, imposing both in the proportions of its façade and its interior colonnade, adorned with frescoed altars. The diversions is short-lived and we unfortunately have to return to the provincial road to carefully tackle the stretch that bypasses the state road, which fortunately lasts only 1 km. We are now in Maglie (km 23), the most densely populated town in the Idruntine area, which offers more than a few opportunities for recreation in its historic centre full of monuments, shops and cafés and centred on Piazza Aldo Moro, named after the statesman and former Italian Prime Minister who was born here. It might be worth visiting the Alca, the early 20th-century cultural complex that houses the municipal library and the Decio de Lorentiis Museum of Palaeontology and Palethnology (http://www.alcamaglie.it) at 117 Via Vittorio Emanuele. A dive into the prehistory of Salento. Maglie has always been an industrious town, and there is much evidence of industrial archaeology to prove it. The former 'Fratelli Piccinno' factory, an old cabinet-making workshop that produced furniture and decorative arts, is unmistakable in its Art Nouveau architecture just down the road from the Via Vittorio Emanuele, opposite the austere Rodia hotel. It should become a museum dedicated to the heritage and glorious past of Magliano factories and specialities. Don't miss a visit to the Benedetto Cavalieri pasta factory, founded in 1872 (located in Via Garibaldi, 64) and also to the former Lamarque tannery, now a historic residence called 'Corte dei Francesi'. Villa Tamborino is an elegant historical garden, now a public park, of which you can admire, in addition to the varied plant elements, some bridges and an octagonal belvedere in oriental style. The route continues towards Scorrano (km 27) and will take you straight into its ancient heart, which looks like a sort of medina with narrow, winding streets, palaces and houses that are now being restored. If there is one period in which it is worth being in this small Salentine town, it is from 5 to 9 July, for the festival of Santa Domenica, when you will be literally stunned by the magic and shapes of the Luminarie (illuminations). The tradition of illuminated decorations comes directly from the Baroque era, which has been documented in Scorrano since at least 1549 and has never stopped since. The De Cagna and Mariano companies have now taken the art and magnificence of Salento's illuminations all over the world, and it will be difficult for you to forget a festival like Santa Domenica in your life. But we resume our journey, once again paying attention to the cars on the provincial road that bypasses the SS275. Be careful because immediately after the bridge we turn right, returning to a quiet rural road that almost takes us back in time, to the Middle Ages. On the right, among some pine trees, you will notice a place brought back to its former glory by a meticulous restoration that has interrupted a centuries-long oblivion: this is the church of Santa Maria di Misciano, named after the medieval village of the same name now in the territory of Muro Leccese (km 31). A treasure trove of frescoes that is well worth a visit. Fortunately, as is often the case in the Salento region, citizens and volunteers are the ones who take care of these places, and the best advice is to ask the "Muro Leccese Città d'Arte" and "Custodi" associations for information (look them up on Facebook). They will also be able to guide you through the town museum, housed in the rooms of the Palazzo del Principe, the Protonobilissimo oil mill and the Archaeological Park, as well as the San Domenico Convent. It is no coincidence that we speak of a widespread museum. At this point on the itinerary, if you have downloaded the shortest route, but also if the time for sightseeing and contemplation has made the hands of the clock run too fast, you return to Otranto. On leaving Muro, a subway with a cycle track allows you to pass another dangerous road in peace. You will find signs for another unmissable place: the La Cutura botanical garden (https://www.lacutura.it/). This is an estate of about 50 hectares that also has a café and restaurant and is one of the most successful experiments in modern botanical collecting in Italy. Once past La Cutura, turn left onto a provincial road and after just under 800 metres continue to the right: the red cycle path of the slow-moving route takes us back to Otranto, pedalling peacefully and safely for about 10 km.

(Metadata) Title: From Poggiardo to the south coast among Messapian warriors, landing places and karstic caves

(Metadata) Descrizione: To complete the exploration of the area south of Otranto, you can take the train to the FSE station in Poggiardo. The railway marks the boundary between town and countryside and also acts as the western limit of this itinerary, which once again looks eastwards. The bare area of the square dedicated to Giovanni Falcone is connected to the centre by the straight stretch of Viale della Repubblica. However, the route deviates towards the inner parallel, which is quieter and in fact a sort of natural cycle path towards the historic centre. A number of ornate palazzotti begin to overlook Piazza Regina Margherita and it is easy to reach the centre of town, with a view of the town hall and the early twentieth-century building of the Istituto Statale d'Arte. It is best to postpone a more relaxed visit until the return journey and head straight for the Parco dei Guerrieri di Vaste (1.8 km). Our route passes through the 20-hectare archaeological area and the park is marked by a majestic portal. Excavations have brought to light the remains of one of the most important centres of Messapia, that of Bastae, and thanks to some reconstructions and various explanatory panels it is possible to learn more about the uses and constructions of the ancient people of Salento. If you want to continue your discovery and admire the famous Messapian "trozzelle", remember to visit the Sigismondo Castromediano Museum in Lecce. For some interesting reading, we suggest the dedicated page of the Salogenis web portal (http://www.salogentis.it/2011/01/02/il-parco-dei-guerrieri-di-vaste-poggiardo/) edited by the Arches Association. The park may not be open and usable, so try to bypass the area and continue towards the small square of Vaste and the provincial road leading to Ortelle (km 4). Before passing through the centre and admiring the Chiesa Madre di San Giorgio, make a small diversions to the right for a quick visit to the area of the church of San Vito e Santa Maria. An important fair is held here at the end of October and the crypt of the Madonna della Grotta, dating back to the 13th century, is also in this area. Leaving Ortelle we take a low-traffic road, via Petracca, which at one point crosses the SP81. Continue through olive groves and dry stone walls until you come to a fork in the road that takes you onto the "old road" to Castro, which leads inland to Spongano (8 km). The trail enters and leaves the village, greeted by the Osanna menhir, but it is worth taking a stroll through the narrow streets of the centre. The ancient castle, later transformed into a palace by the Barons Bacile di Castiglione, is now a historic residence where it is also possible to stay. The itinerary continues on to Diso (11.5 km) and Vignacastrisi (13 km), a hamlet of Ortelle, before arriving at Marittima (15 km), a hamlet of Diso, along part of the route of the Via Francigena del Sud. The centre of Marittima has recently been redeveloped with new paving stones and the streets are wider than those of the small towns crossed previously. This, however, makes them vulnerable to parked cars and it will depend a lot on how you feel and the situation you find yourself in to decide whether or not to stop, perhaps for a short break, in front of the Torre di Alfonso (named after the owner) in Via Cellini, right next to the elegant baronial palazzo Maglietta, whose history you can read in a marble epigraph. Here, too, you can make a small diversions to the cemetery, on the road to Castro, to discover the church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli. Another old road and here we are in Andrano (km 18). The entire area around the castle, a 13th-century Salento fortress later converted into a palace, is worth a closer look. Now home to the Pro Loco and the consortium that manages the Costa Otranto - Santa Maria di Leuca and Bosco di Tricase Regional Nature Park, Andrano Castle is also used as a venue for exhibitions, conferences and various municipal initiatives. It might be worth extending the route to visit the hamlet of Castiglione d'Otranto. For several years now, every 31 August, there has been the Notte Verde (Green Night), an event on sustainable farming practices, solidarity economy and harmonious development of the territory organised by the Casa delle AgriCulture Tullia e Gino (https://www.casadelleagriculturetulliaegino.com). Buy some good hot bread produced in Salento's first community mill. From Andrano, however, our route quickly gains spectacular views of the Adriatic, passing along several sheep-tracks and cart tracks before quickly slipping into the municipal marina. From the car park in front of the coastal tower there are several paths, the most famous of which is the one leading south to the Serra del Mito, to be done exclusively on foot. By bike, on the other hand, you can enjoy a close-up view of the coast along the new pedestrianised 'agave' promenade, which then continues along Viale Europa. Once on the coastal road, you can pedal effortlessly more or less on the flat for about 5 km before arriving in Castro (km 28). One of the few towns in Salento that is not just a place of second homes but inhabited all year round, it takes its name from the ancient Castrum Minervae due to the presence of a temple consecrated to Minerva or Athena according to Greek mythology. We have only been certain of this for a very short time thanks to the excavation campaigns conducted by the University of Salento and coordinated by Salento archaeologist Francesco D'Andria. Just think that after an initial discovery of part of the bust of the statue dedicated to the goddess in 2015, other parts were found in the following years. It is therefore certain that this is the place where, according to legend, Aeneas landed on his journey across the Mediterranean. Castro is therefore an important stop on the European cultural itinerary dedicated to the myth of the Aeneid (https://www.aeneasroute.org/) and you shouldn't miss a visit to the town museum, which will reveal more details of this thousand-year-old story (https://www.museoarcheologicocastro.it). Just outside the town, going up the coast road, you will find Grotta Zinzulusa, the only Italian karstic site among the ten in the world to be listed by the Karst Waters Institute (KWI) as worthy of protection. Grotta Zinzulusa is one of the most interesting manifestations of karst phenomena in the Salento area and is one of the most famous destinations in Salento. Here you can not only visit the Romanelli cave from land or sea, but also take a dip in the crystal clear waters of the sea. You'll be enraptured by the views and beauty of the coastline as far as Porto Miggiano and Santa Cesarea Terme (34 km). Be sure to admire the eclectic Raffaella and Sticchi villas, the latter exquisitely inlaid with arabesque motifs and with its unmistakable ochre-coloured dome that contrasts with some indigo bands and provides the perfect backdrop for an iconic photo of this route. Unfortunately, the spa is still closed and in the process of being relaunched, but some of the streets and squares have been given a new look and it is pleasant to walk through Via Roma and the hotel area. Now, however, we head back inland and it takes at least 2 km of hairpin bends to reach the point where we turn right from this scenic route onto Via Madonna dell'Idri. Dry stone walls, olive trees and cultivated fields lead us to the chapel, actually a small church, dedicated to the Virgin and recently restored. It is halfway between the coast and the hamlet of Cerfignano (km 40), another town with tiny streets suitable for both people and bicycles, followed closely by Cocumola (km 41.5), another hamlet, this time in Minervino di Lecce. These towns, like others in the area, are famous for the Tavole di San Giuseppe, the traditional folk event that every 19 March renews the banquets set up in the homes of local families, open to visitors. A sign of how much the inhabitants are inclined to hospitality and devotion. Just a few more kilometres to return to Poggiardo, following, as always, a low-traffic road. In the end, the total number of kilometres will certainly be more than the 47 provided by the route, especially if you have followed all the suggested detours and opportunities for local exploration. But Poggiardo is also the ideal place to end this journey with a visit to the local museum of Byzantine frescoes and a moment of relaxation in the sumptuous garden of Villa Episcopo. All of this with an eye on the next Sud Est train that will take you back to Otranto, unless you decide to spend the night here, staying in a B&B or one of the many farms in the area, perhaps treating yourself to a dinner out to the sound of crickets, as you look back over all the places you have passed through.
